Our Vision

To provide the focal point for joint research between General Motors Research & Development and the University of Michigan, establishing the framework to link faculty expertise with long-term GM needs and to motivate the growth and strengthening of additional areas of excellence of importance to GM.

Our Mission
  • To carry out research and development activities in areas that are of critical importance to General Motors (GM) for internal combustion engine and aftertreatment systems by using special expertise of the University of Michigan to understand and exploit the fundamental processes which control engine operation in order to maximize efficiency and minimize emissions.
  • To facilitate the exchange of technical personnel between GM Research & Development (GM R&D) and the University of Michigan.
  • To provide research opportunities and an enhanced educational environment to graduate students, as well as augment GM’s ability to attract exceptional engineering talent with training in areas of interest to GM.

Synergies
The University of Michigan College of Engineering (UM CoE) is a world-class educational institution located in the immediate vicinity of GM R&D. Historically, a large number of UM CoE graduates have pursued careers in General Motors Corporation and in GM R&D in particular. There is also a rich history of a variety of successful research programs between the two institutions. The University’s research enterprise has consistently had a global viewpoint and its faculty are well connected to peers and institutions around the world. This global viewpoint and outreach is consistent with GM’s evolving global business environment.
Our faculty intellectual interests and expertise at UM CoE closely parallel some of GM’s core research needs. It is to our mutual benefit that the University’s work in fundamental research areas is identified, strengthened, motivated and verified by complementary work at GM R&D.
Many high-quality students are attracted to the UM CoE because of the leadership and global impact of its automotive research and educational activities. An active partnership between GM and UM CoE promotes not only the University’s ability to provide an enhanced educational environment and launch its graduates into successful careers, but also GM’s ability to positively influence the learning environment, as well as to attract outstanding engineering talent.
